Hi all, I've been playing oblivion for ages now and sure its had its problems that ive been able to fix and have fought my way to level 47. Now, halfway through the caves of theMehrunes Razor Quest, I quicksaved and closed. I opened up oblivion again, and went to load the quicksave. It asks ''Are you sure you want to load this savegame?'' as per usual, and I click Yes. Then everything freezes, no loading screen, just that dialog box and the music from the loading screen. Unable to move the mouse, I Ctrl+Alt+Delete out of the game. ( a few times I left it going for ages to see if it would finally do anything, but it would just sit on 100% CPU for 10 minutes)I have tried disabling my mods - except for KotN and Shivering Isles and still I get this problem. Also I have tried using the .bak file of my quicksave. I cannot return to my Autosave as that is of another character on the machine. All my other saves work fine except for the quicksave. I have also tried duplicating the quicksave and renaming it into a normal save. What baffles me the most is i do not get the ''corrupt save'' error and oblivion shows all the information from the file such as the screenshot (also the character name, play time and place, though this is retrieved through the filename so that info is irrelevant).I havent tried reinstalling yet as a friend has my disk, but the only other thing I might try is turning off theDLC data files in case it is the area i am in that is not liking to load, so if it cant find the area it should place my character somewhere like Imperial city or outside the entrance to the cave right?I sent my save to a friend, and his did exactly the same thing as mine, I dont think reinstalling or disabling these mods will work, so does anyone have any other ideas that i can use? Otherwise, I am going to have to go back three hours of my characters live, down a level and a few quests, and enchantments where i really focused on my characters strength...not happy lol, please help me guys! This shouldnt be a hardware problem as the game works perfectly on any other save, so i wont relay my specs just right now. Has this happened to anyone else?EDIT: (I'm using version 1.2, and disabling Downloaded Content didnt work) Oblivion - Crashes when loading my Savegame
Do you have the most up-to-date patch? There was some sort of memory leak issue early in the game that caused precisely your problem, if I'm not mistaken. I think. What would happen is after many dozen hours (the amount varied for different people, but it was always after a long time with a single character), the game would stop working and would crash at one point in time everytime. If this is your problem, I'm afraid it's too late to fix it. Only a fresh game using the patch that fixed the bug will be unaffected by it, so your only option would be to just patch your game and start a new character. Still, it's possible that's not your problem (since I don't recall people crashing right when they load their game), and is sure not to be if you have the latest version.I recommend you ask on the Oblivion forum if you want a more guaranteed, definitive answer.Oblivion - Crashes when loading my Savegame
I started posting before your edit. Now that I see you're using 1.2, I believe that's the problem. It was the patch released after that that got rid of the issue I spoke of. So, that's probably what's happened to you, the form ID bug. If I'm right, I'm very sorry to tell you that your level 47 character is gone for good; the only thing you can do is patch your game and start a new character.
hi thanks for replying :)the doesnt exactly crash at a point in time during game play, nor does it really ''crash'' at all i suppose, ''freeze'' is probably the word I am looking for here lol. It doesnt go back to windows or anything until I use task manager It would be content to just sit there on 100% cpu for days :P. The freeze happens just as I click ''Yes''. However, it does appear that there is a 1.2.416 patch that I dont have, I only have 1.2.2##. I will try this ;) My character has just hit 260 hours of gameplay but I dont think I am getting the problem you are describing. Or maybe it is, who knows lol?!thanks for your help, I'll let you know how the new patch goes.
Well, its not exactly gone for good, I still have the save from level 46 which works fine. Ill try the 1.2.416 patch and see if it does anything. Thankfully I'll only lose 3 hours of gameplay, not 260 lol!

Even if you patch the game, your game will still mess up aproximately three hours later (or however long it has left before the bug takes full effect again). Patching the game will not reverse the problem once it's started on a certain character. It only keeps it from happening from the start.
can you please explain what this formID bug actually does to the game? does it freeze it or crash it to the desktop in gameplay? Cause I have a feeling that the problem I am having is slightly different to the one the patch fixes, or maybe thats just me hoping lol
Well, generally crashing and freezing aren't seperated. A game doesn't have to crash to the desktop to be considered to have crashed. They say the game ''crashes,'' because something goes wrong and the game just stops working all of a sudden (similar to what happens when a plane or car crashes, it stops, it doesn't work), whether it be from locking up or crashing to the menu or crashing to the desktop. But anyway, the readme describes it as crashing.Regardless, I still think you ought to ask on the Oblivion forum. I never experienced the problem myself, and it was a long time ago when I was reading about the problem a lot, so I don't remember some of the details. But there are people who will know the situation better than I do at the Oblivion forum, so you're sure to get some good, reliable help there.EDIT - Whoops, meant to post the patch's listed changes.5.
