Could Thief: The Dark Project ever be turned into a movie? It has a great story, setting and protagonist. What do people think about this? I don't just want yes or no answers. Thanks. xx Thief: The Dark Project: A Movie?
Well now that you meantion it, it could sound like a...ye olde heist movie lol, but hey, Hitman was a great game to movie transition, and I bet Thief could do a great job too.Thief: The Dark Project: A Movie?

When it comes to casting for a video game transition, I think getting the main characters voice right is very important, They did the best they could for Hitman, but they weren't spot on with 47's voice. So whoever would play Garrett, they should get the voice right. No one comes to mind though.screw it, we'll just let Samuel L. Jackson do it, haha, jk.

I didn't think of that: the voice. You couldn't possibly change it. Believe it or not though he is making his acting debut in some romantic comedy called Chatham!!
How closely would you want it to follow the story? Exact and maybe cut out a few missions or what? Also, what kind of action would there be in it? Could you really just have a movie with him sneaking around?! :S
Yes.But it doesn't need to be a live action movie. It could be CG - or better yet, cell animation, or a hybrid. Something like Sky Blue. With that kind of freedom, it would be very easy to capture Thief's wonderful styIe and it would of course mean Steven Russell could come in and do the voicework, which would be perfect.Animated movies might not be big business - but I for one think anime is just better in so many ways. I would dearly love for the west to adopt anime as an adult medium, without eastern visual or styIe or influences. Just cartoons for grown ups.

So would it be watchable to see him just sneaking around? Its difficult to explain what I'm trying to say.

[/QUOTE]I understand exactly what you mean - It's very hard to convey any computer game experience in a movie because the two are so utterly incompatible. If you look at most other game movies, they don't try to recreate the game - just the story. I don't know hwo it would work in a film - but first of all, with it being an animation, they could get away with it being short. Like 70 or 80 minutes. So it's not exactly like there needs to be a ton of filler in there. As far as his thieving goes, I think it would be pretty fun to watch a master thief in action. I always got a kick out of watching people be really good at something, almost no matter what it was. It would take some good directing, but I think Garrett never getting caught could be exciting if they could convey how tough it actually is to infiltrate a castle full of guards with little more than a blackjack and a lockpick.Plus, it's not exactly like having Garrett slip up and get into a few sword fights would be out of context. It does happen in the game, that makes it canon. They can throw in a few fights to liven things up - but I also find stealth extremely tense, when it's handled properly. If you've ever seen 24, there's a scene in Day 4 where Jack Bauer infiltrates the Chinese embassy. It was handled extremely well, and it felt awesome watching it. Stealth definitely works well on screen, when done properly.I think some of the missions can be cut as far as the actual game content goes, but the story structure has a clear start, middle and end as far as a screenplay might be concerned. There isn't much dialogue, but that can easily be handled with inner monologues - we hear his thoughts about the things he is doing - which is also a good means of exposition. Plus, it would just mean even more of Steve Russell's voice, which I think is a good thing.I think it'd work well - in fact, now that you've got me thinking about it, this would be freaking awesome. I want this, now.
It's not a question that Thief could be made into a movie. The question is that could it be made into a good movie. I think it would work best as a CG animated movie. I think it should also try to keep it's dark, violent, and sometimes scary nature with a hint of comedy. Something like this might be right up Tim Burton's alley.
We should start trying to write it ourselves!!
