I've been playing Eve Online 14-day trial on my older PC and it's fun as hell (if you have patience and too much free time)...Any other games that have a multiplayer, are popular, and feature ship customization and space exploration?Especially something that is faster paced than EVE and is recent?Any other non-subscription games like EVE Online?

FreelancerAlthough I will bet youll get bored fast. Singleplayer is fun though.
Freelancer is what EVE would be if it were about 1/1000th in size, based on reflexes instead of skill, and lacking in a real economy.But it's Free online. :D Enjoy kiddo.
